An Osmosis Between Man and Nature Evoking Romantic Spirit: A Reflection on Time, Words, and the Nuances of Being in the World
The thirty-fourth production from nusica.org, a cultural association dedicated to promoting and supporting innovative artists.
The new work by PDuRN trio, titled Coglians, will be released on February 18, 2025. Preceding the album is the single Alle pendici del Coglians, available starting February 7.
Balancing between dream and reality, PDuRN trio’s latest album captures the essence of a work steeped in natural sensitivity. The title, Coglians, embodies the spirit of the album, resonating with themes of connection, tradition, exploration, and memory. Set to be released under the nusica.org label, the album features guest guitarist Marcello Abate and explores jazz as a lens to navigate a prismatic and elusive universe. This journey reflects the primordial relationship between humanity and nature, crystallized by the majesty of Mount Coglians, the highest peak in Friuli-Venezia Giulia.
Each composition is distinguished by its layered mutability, defying categorizations and instead focusing on intricate details. The result is a masterful balance of form and meaning. The trio—Daniele Nasi on saxophone, Giancarlo Patris on double bass, and Margherita Parenti on drums—has crafted a sophisticated and unique album. Its tracks communicate with one another, unveiling the richness of words and the inexpressible correspondence between reality and representation.

Coglians
Alle Pendici del Coglians (D. Nasi)
An idyllic yet untamed landscape unfolds between lush valleys and rocky peaks, with a radiant sun peeking through ominous clouds. This melody transcends borders, composed on the spot at the foot of the highest mountain in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, shortly after climbing to its summit with the instrument in tow and crossing into Austria by circumnavigating the mountain.
Distratto Contratto (M. Parenti)
There’s a YouTube video by Roberto Mercadini about the anxiety of public speaking, where he says: *”You need to be relaxed but not distracted, focused but not tense; relaxed and focused, not distracted and tense.”* His advice struck me as useful not only for speakers but also for performers. I also loved the sound of the last two words together. I wrote and arranged this piece inspired by their meaning and their crisp, sturdy sound.
Wilderness ft. Marcello Abate (D. Nasi)
This piece reimagines melodies from the third movement of Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, *From the New World* (in E minor). It was originally composed for a presentation intertwining American literature’s nature-themed poetry (selected and read by Franco Nasi) with music evoking the landscapes of the New World.
Ominous Rain (D. Nasi)
This piece encapsulates the anxiety every musician feels when a summer storm looms, threatening to cancel a festival performance. Inspired by a true story.
Ogni Strato (G. Patris)
The inspiration for this composition is rooted in a dream—an experience as peculiar as it was fascinating. That dream gave birth to a piece with a non-linear structure, where jagged, frantic moments alternate with smooth, enveloping passages. This duality is especially pronounced in the second half, as harsh tones fade away, making room for a gentler, dreamlike sound enriched by an extended, passionate saxophone solo. Initially titled *Strange Dream*, a typo transformed it into *Every Layer*. The new title turned out to be perfect, capturing the piece’s many layers and nuances.
Alle Pendici del Coglians ft. Marcello Abate (D. Nasi)
Like track 1, but with Marcello Abate adding a touch of sweetness to the composition.
